Jokerfliegen & Blind Booking – > ready for take off!

You’re ready for a holiday but you lack the big bucks to afford an oversea- vacation? You’re spontaneous and up for something new? Check out “Blind Booking”/ “Jokerfliegen”.

For a fixed price you book a flight without knowing the exact destination in advance. You only get to see categories of destinations and it is not until a few weeks before the flight that you’ll get to know where you’re actually heading. There are two German airlines (correct me if there’re more) that offer the so-called “blind-booking” experience.

1. If you prefer an over-seas destination, Condor offers “Jokerfliegen”, where you pay 199 € for destinations like Barbados, Cuba, Goa, or the following:

For an extra 19€ you can cross out 8 destinations in total. In addition, the member of the Thomas Cook Group also offers short-haul trips to European destinations plus Morocco or Turkey for a fixed price of 49 €.
You can freely choose the date where you wish to fly within the next 60 days, given that they’re still available.

Achim Lameyer, sales manager of Condor  announces “Joker Fliegen ist DIE Chance für abenteuerlustige Schnäppchenjäger”.

True, there are however two conditions that should be considered: There’s only one airport of departure, which is Frankfurt/Main. The second condition which might be even more considerable is  the fact that the price only accounts for a one-way ticket, yet you need to return somehow, it is even obligatory to buy a return ticket as well. Imagetours.de indicate in their blog that consequently you’ll end up paying  398 € for long-haul destinations and 98 € for short-haul routes.

2. option of „Blind Booking“ is Germanwings, a Lufthansa-affiliate that concentrates on European destinations only. In contrast to Condor, you can select in advance categories of the type of vacation you prefer, like

  • Party
  • Culture
  • Sun & Beach
  • Shopping
  • Hiking & Nature
  • Metropolis in Western Europe
  • Metropolis in Eastern Europe

Except for the category “Sun & Beach” (49.99 €), all other categories are available for 29.99 €.
As a first step, you choose the airport of departure. In contrast to Condor, there are several airports you can choose from, like Cologne/Bonn, Berlin, Hanover and Stuttgart. After choosing the category of the trip you can freely select the date where you wish to travel.

The student blog “Pflichtlektüre” refers to the blind-booking experience as „Fliegen mit Ü-Ei Effekt“. That describes it pretty well.
The blog further reveals that „Blind Booking“ is primarily a marketing campaign after all.
Heinz Joachim Schöttes, press relations officer of Germanwings explains „Wir wollen interessanter für unsere Kunden werden und sie auf unsere Homepage ziehen. Viele Leute wollen sich gerne überraschen lassen“.
Apart from the marketing success, it’s further profitable for the airlines as they get their flights fully booked.

To conclude, “Blind Booking” and “Jokerfliegen” are cheap alternatives to fly, one however has to consider that the cheap prices only account for a one-way ticket and that all conditions listed on the respective homepage should be closely considered in advance before one can enjoy such a spontaneous trip. I believe that 398 €uros for a ticket to places like Brazil or Cuba is still much cheaper than you would normally pay. Besides, it is of mutual benefit: while the airline gets to sell its tickets that could otherwise not be sold anymore, students like me and all those that could normally not afford to pay regular long-haul ticket prices benefit from it.
I really feel like trying it out this summer. What about you?

Hi sonja, thank you for the awesome introduction to this new trend of ‘blind-booking’ options. definitely a new form of travel and as much as it may just be a marketing gimmick and for the company to sell their ‘leftover’ tickets at a low price, i agree, it is a win-win situation for both low-price seekers and the airline!

Well, people these days are adventurous and it is a great idea for an innovative release of such holiday tickets. it would definitely be exciting to try out. if only, i found out this earlier!

i like how you actually gave us two options and comparisons of two similar services already in the market.:) it was very informative and the comparison lets us decide which we are more suited to. great job i really enjoyed reading this post! :)

    Dear Sonja!
Thank you for imforming us about this interesting and useful topic! As we all love to travel, but we also love to save money, this is a nice alternative! I think it is great to be so excited about were to end up and at the same time to be happy that you’ve payed so little.
To me the offer of German Wings seems a little bit more interesting and also cheaper. The disadvatage is that you never know how and when to get back. So maybe you end up paying more? Sometimes you find really cheap regular flight offers online, where you know exactly how much to pay and when and how to get back.
Anyway this is a very clever idea of the airlines and also good for us. I hope to read more from you about this cool topic and maybe you can present us some field reports, so we know whether to do this or not?

Hey, thanks for your comments! I will try to find out what ‘experts’ say about this type of offers from airlines and see if I can find some experience reports. I’ll let you know next week :)

    Hey Sonja,
    what an amazing post!
When I read your aticle I was so exited about finding out more about Jokerfliegen and Blind Booking, so I checked out the websites of Condor and Germanwings. Do you know when I actually know where my trip will go? Right after booking the flight or maybe not before sitting in airplane?
I’m so curious and I hope I can try it out during university vacation this year.
    Thanks so much!

    Hey Laura,
thanks for your comment! Good question, the airlines kept this information very unspecific but I found on other websites that when booking with Germanwings, you’ll get to know your destination right about you submitted your booking request, (http://www.mzee.com/forum/showthread.php?t=100120320&page=1). When booking Jokerfliegen via Condor, you’ll also find out your destination with the booking confirmation in your email (http://www.abenteuer-reisen.de/node/32586). Let me know if you try it out this year :)

    Hey Sonja,

how cool, isn’t it? I would really join you, but first I have to earn some more money ;)
I liked that you took account on both sides of the coin! This reflects that you have done a huge reasearch in advance, Also the way you are writing is very professional, but understandable for “normal” students! There must be more airlines offering such surprising presents :)

    Hej Sonja,

What an absolutely intriguing idea! Although I have heard about Jokerfliegen and Blind Booking I haven’t really thought about actually doing it, but the way you describe it really sounds like a lot of fun booking a flight and not knowing where it will go. If you are willing to be surprised, I think it will be worth the try.
For people who want to have some influence on the choice of their holiday destination and still don’t want to pay so much, last minute booking could be an alternative. There you can also often find relatively cheap offers.
I think I will try out blind booking in some time, the airlines have just so many worthwhile destinations on offer that it is a high chance I will get something I really want to go to.
    Good job with your post!

    Dear Sonja,
I really appreciate your topic because it covers a topic that I did not deal with before. I never made a booking like that but always wanted to try it! I like very much that you started with a citation. It is short but catchy.
Just as you described in your third part many people discuss about finding a solution to get to their desired destination, so did my friends. I think they did not find a solution for it. But neverthe less, especially students and young people want to discover the world and they love surprises. When the flight is cheap and you are more or less indifferent about the destination then it can really be a good option, for both sides. Airlines are always striving forward to fully book their flights.
Your post actually made me check some offers :D
    Thanks for posting!
